The purpose of the Worship Committee is to join the minister(s) in the oversight of the religious activities of the Congregation and to foster Christian fellowship.
The Worship Committee is responsible to the Congregation through Council for
the order of worship and the ministry of music
administration of the sacraments
presenting to Council suitable prospective candidates for the order of ministry or for licence to preach
ushering at church services
coordinating and supervising the activities of the subcommittees
The subcommittees report to the Worship Committee on all matters for which they are responsible.
The duties and activities of the Worship Committee and its subcommittees include the following:
Co-operating with the ministers in ensuring that the order of worship and the administration of the sacraments meet the needs of the Congregation.
Setting policy for the use of the church sanctuary to ensure that the use is in accordance with the convictions and the desires of the members and adherents of the church.
Securing pulpit supply when needed.
Overseeing the contents of the Sunday bulletin, including the suitability of the cover design.
Overseeing the purchase and maintenance of Bibles and hymn books.
Providing student ministers with encouragement and financial support.
Developing policies for such ceremonies as baptisms, weddings and funerals.
Approving the names of those to be received into membership by baptism.
Organizing, supervising and conducting the ushering activities for worship services and other functions held in the sanctuary.
Lighting candles and putting up hymn numbers for services.
Ensuring that the sanctuary is properly heated and ventilated prior to services by opening windows, regulating fans, etc.
Taking up the offering and making sure that it is taken out after the service for counting.
Ensuring that the hymn books and Bibles are properly distributed throughout the sanctuary.
Providing assistance in emergencies during worship services.
Holding meetings at least quarterly and at the call of the chair.
Planning with the Director of Music and/or Organist and music group leaders the musical life of Woodroffe United Church, including
assisting in recruiting members for music groups (choirs, etc.)
inviting guest musicians when appropriate and coordinating their participation
assisting the Director of Music and/or Organist or other music group leaders with organizing and promoting music events
Establishing objectives and goals regarding church music and programs and initiating appropriate action and receiving/soliciting suggestions from the Congregation to be included in the music program.
Recommending an adequate budget for music, instruments, instrument maintenance, supply Director of Music and/or Organist, leader training and honoraria when required.
Assisting the Worship Committee and ministers in the evaluation of overall music programs.
Administering the Woodwark Student Bursary Fund.
Being the official receiver of all memorial gifts.
Determining the suitability of memorial gifts and the acceptability of any conditions attached thereto.
Recommending the areas in which memorial gifts may be applied.
Establishing the means whereby memorial gifts will be suitably identified.
Being responsible to the Congregation for the administration of all memorial gifts, including the acknowledgment of gifts and the maintenance of suitable records and accounts, with the exception of chancel flowers or funds donated for the purchase of flowers as memorials.
Purchasing and presenting for dedication suitable memorials for deceased members and adherents.
Authorizing payment of all expenses related to memorials.
Participating in any decisions taken to renovate, replace or dispose of any memorial.
Arranging for the provision and care of suitable flowers for the chancel and for their arrangement and display.
Arranging for appropriate disposal of flowers after Sunday or other services.
Ensuring the cleanliness and readiness of the chancel for worship services and advising the church office staff of any remedial action required.
Cleaning and polishing chancel brass, offering plates and candlesticks, ensuring that they are in place as required and purchasing candles and other chancel items.
Caring for linens used at sacrament services.
Caring for and displaying communion table coverings and lectern, pulpit and wall hangings as appropriate.
Recommending to the Worship Committee any changes, additions or purchases that would improve or enhance the appearance of the chancel.
